The D.W. Field Park Initiative

Overview

D.W. Field Park is a 700-acre city park managed by the City of Brockton’s Department of Parks and Recreation. The park contains several miles of paved roads and trails around seven bodies of water, providing access to nature and outdoor recreation for 100,000+ residents of Brockton and surrounding communities. Brockton resident, businessman, and nature enthusiast, Daniel Waldo Field, created the park in the 1930s and donated it to the city for the enjoyment of all people. In 2000, the park was designated a National Historic Site.

This beloved park is a popular spot in the community for walking, running, fishing, and bicycling. Many enjoy the park early in the morning before the road is open to vehicles. After the gates open at 10:00 am, vehicles have one-way access through the park, while pedestrians are relegated to the left side of the road and the various paved and unpaved foot trails. The road is closed to vehicles for the annual Tower Fest, hosted by the D.W. Field Park Association each October, when the iconic fieldstone tower is open for visitors.

While its original beauty has been largely maintained, time and heavy use have degraded both the environment and infrastructure that support water quality, wildlife habitat, and community activity at the park. With a long-standing history of collaboration with the City of Brockton on various conservation projects, Wildlands and the City are partnering once again to bring our vision for this park to life.

Vision for D.W. Field Park:

Wildlands Trust believes that effective regional conservation begins by meeting each community’s unique needs for green space. We envision D.W. Field Park to be a vibrant city park that serves the community and the environment. Revitalization projects will improve water quality, climate resilience, and wildlife habitat, while promoting accessibility and expanding outdoor recreational opportunities.
