Programs
at the Stewardship Training Center
We advance land conservation through skill-building for
volunteers and continuing education for professionals.
Amid the climate and biodiversity crises, land protection is receiving long overdue attention as a solution to both. But how we will care for this influx of conservation land remains an open question. Programs at the Stewardship Training Center (STC) equip stewardship staff and volunteers with the skills and confidence they need to maximize the benefits of protected land to people and planet.

For Volunteers
Volunteers are integral to the stewardship of conservation lands across the Northeast. Our volunteer training programs help generous individuals maximize their impact on the lands they love by building their confidence and skill set.
Tiered Volunteer Training Series: Our Tiered Volunteer Training Series equips current and prospective volunteers with the skills and knowledge most valued by municipal conservation departments. Piloted in spring 2024, the Tier 1 series included four two-hour workshops at the STC in core stewardship areas: Basic First Aid & CPR, Public Advocacy & Challenges, Hand Tool Use & Maintenance, and Trail Monitoring & Maintenance. In summer 2024, our Twilight Trailmasters series gave Tier 1 volunteers the opportunity to put their new skills to work while forging connections with their local conservation authorities.
Planning for future trainings is underway. Stay tuned!
For Professionals
Municipal, state, and nonprofit conservation professionals form the backbone of our region’s land stewardship capacity. STC programs aim not only to enhance professionals’ skills and expertise, but also to build a dynamic community where ideas, opportunities, and support flow freely among organizations and agencies with shared conservation goals.
Conservation GIS Workshop Series: In fall 2024, the STC is partnering with Essex County Greenbelt to host 4 virtual workshops for those interested in building their conservation GIS skills. Learn more & register here.
Seasonal Land Steward Training: Every June, our Seasonal Land Steward Training prepares seasonal stewardship staff for their busy summers ahead with diverse trainings from instructors across the region. The two-day program also allows participants to bond and network among peers, supporting their hopes of staying in the land conservation field beyond their position term.
We’re always devising new ways to serve the land conservation community! Share your ideas for new programs by emailing Stewardship Programs Manager Zoë Smiarowski at trainingcenter@wildlandstrust.org.
