Join us for an engaging workshop designed for land trust and municipal staff, hosted by the Stewardship Training Center (STC) at the Community Conservation Barn. This program, developed in collaboration with Upstream Carbon and Plymouth’s Climate Action Net-Zero Committee – sponsoring events for Climate Week and the launch Plymouth’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan – explores the intersection of land use, conservation, and carbon management.
Agenda Highlights:
Predicting Land Use: Delve into methods for assessing development risks at the parcel level to optimize land for housing, energy, and environmental conservation.
Local and Regional Insights: Examine the unique factors influencing the development of open space in Southeastern Massachusetts - from grid proximity and public transportation to soil quality and landowner tenure. Learn how regional trends can translate into specific risks and opportunities for individual parcels.
Essential Public Data: Discover where to find and how to utilize publicly available datasets—covering real estate market values; disadvantaged communities; carbon storage, accumulation, and equivalencies; more—to enhance site selection, project prioritization, and impact communication.
Measuring Climate Impact: Learn how to safely use concepts like avoided conversion, carbon stock, and carbon flux when measuring and promoting the climate impact of conservation projects.
What the Future Holds: Discuss how the integration of development risk with community and environmental impact can reform carbon markets, improve funding mechanisms, and enhance local conservation efforts.
Outcomes:
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to apply scientific and economic tools to enhance conservation outcomes and support sustainable community planning. The workshop aims to foster a dialogue about innovative conservation strategies that align ecological health with community development goals.
